I'm flying!

11/26, 6:51 pm KSA: Sorry this is going to be another short one, but we're running late and we have to leave for the airport in 39 minutes. I will try to write more when we get to the hotel...

Quick update: we will be in Jeddah for the next few days, and it sounds like we're going to have an awesome time!

I am so excited about your trip to the Middle East. I have been looking to take a class at the local university on Middle Eastern culture. I think it is important that we have an understanding of this part of the world, how they live, how they approach life. I'm sure you are somewhat secluded from stuff but, as your correspondence indicates, you are absorbing a lot about the region. What about the tribes outside the urban areas? What about the strictness of their religion? In my readings, I understand theirs is the most repressive? I can't wait to talk to you when you get back. Peace!!

Aunt Juanita-

You mentioned that the religion of Islam is the most repressive, but I am under the impression that it's not so much religious influence as it is also the society and culture. For example, we were told that the Koran does not mention that women cannot drive cars, which would seem obvious. Some women would like to drive, while others do not because if they were allowed to drive, then they would have to perform errands, such as picking up children from school, going for groceries, etc. One woman remarked that is why she likes having a driver; she can send the driver to do errands!

It is important that we learn about all cultures to gain a better understanding as our world shrinks daily due to technological advances and the growth of the global market, but I think that we have to focus more on the Middle East and Asia. Because of 9/11, the US has decreased its business dealings in KSA, and many Indian and Asian businesses are snatching them up. To regain its standing in the KSA, the US needs to be more pro-active than being re-active!
